Paisley and Renfrewshire North Candidate Profiles

Jim Sheridan

Jim Sheridan is 55 years old and has lived in Erskine, Renfrewshire for the past 28 years.  Prior to entering politics, Jim worked as a material handler for Thales Optronics (formerly Bar and Stroud) in Glasgow where he also served as a Trade Union Convener with the Transport and General Workers Union. Jim has been a supporter of the Labour movement all his life and has been a member for the past 25 years.

In 2000, Jim was selected as the Labour Candidate to contest the West Renfrewshire seat in the 2001 General Election and on 7 June was elected to Parliament. Jim has a special interest in employment legislation, foreign affairs, international development and home affairs.

Alistair Campbell

Alistair is a Scottish businessman who, having enjoyed thirty years of private sector industry, has decided to enter politics.

He joined the Paisley and Renfrewshire Conservative and Unionist Association in 2006 and was the Conservative candidate in the Elderslie by-election in the same year. He took the Party's placing ahead of the Lib Dems and helped reduce Labour's long standing hold to a tiny majority

He stood in Paisley East and Ralston during the 2007 Council elections, again increasing the Conservative vote in a Labour stronghold.

Alistair is looking forward to the challenge of fighting for Renfrewshire in the next General Election as a Scottish Conservative and Unionist. He thinks politicians of all parties have to regain the respect and trust of the public which has been lost over the last decade or so.

Mags MacLaren

Local campaigner, Mags currently works as Manager for a Glasgow-based charity dealing with equalities, employment and training issues.

She has formerly worked at a senior level for Renfrewshire Council and within the social housing sector.

Before entering politics Mags obtained her degree (BA in Business Administration and IT from University of Paisley) through evening study while pursuing her career path.

Ruaraidh Dobson

Ruaraidh became interested in the Liberal Democrats during the May 2007 election, but didn't become involved until after Nick Clegg was elected leader at the end of that year. After hearing Clegg interviewed and reading more about and from him, Ruaraidh took the plunge and joined the party.

Since then, he's been heavily involved in the Glasgow University Lib Dems, as well as Katy Gordon's campaign for Glasgow North and Jo Swinson MP's work in East Dunbartonshire. In November 2008, he co-founded Liberal Youth Scotland (the youth and student wing of the party) and in April 2009 was elected President, a position he held until January this year.

In his non-political life, Ruaraidh is a third-year Microbiology student at the University of Glasgow.
