East Dunbartonshire Candidate Profiles


Jo Swinson

Jo Swinson became an MP in 2005 after winning the newly created East Dunbartonshire seat.  In addition, she stood in 2003 for the Scottish Parliament seat of Strathkelvin & Bearsden.

Jo attended Douglas Academy in Milngavie and after reading Management at the London School of Economics, worked in Marketing and as a PR Manager for a number of companies, including for Glasgow-based company Space and People.
Jo has been an active member of the Liberal Democrats since 1997.  She carried out the roles of Secretary and Vice Chair of the Liberal Democrat Youth & Students organisation, before being elected to the Liberal Democrats' Federal Executive in 2002.  She is currently chair of the Party's Campaign for Gender Balance.
During her time as an MP she has joined campaigns to save local post offices, to allow Votes at 16, on citizen's pensions and against the council tax.

Jo was appointed party Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs in January 2008. She previously held the roles of Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport; Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland and Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities.



Mark Nolan

A law graduate from Strathclyde University, Mark is also a graduate of Glasgow University, where he gained a degree in politics. He also studied music and Scottish literature. During his time at Glasgow he spent a summer working in Washington DC in the not so conservative offices of Senator. Ted Kennedy and President Bill Clinton. 

A keen musician, he is an organist in the Church of Scotland, and spends his spare time at the gym or on the golf course.



Mary Galbraith

Mary is a freelance management consultant from Bishopton. She graduated from Glasgow University with a degree in Economics and German, before going on to work for the NHS in Paisley and for the Scottish Development Agency.

As a management consultant she claims to have helped major employers bring jobs to the area, secured investment for public services and introduced new computer systems for companies, including PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young. she has also served as community services manger for Argyll and Clyde Health Board.

Mary is as a member of the Senior Salaries Review Body, which makes recommendations about the pay of senior civil service, senior military personnel and the judiciary.



Iain White

Iain graduated in Science from Glasgow University, but for the past 25 years has run a small business, both here and in the south of England.

He was Chairman of the British Computer Society in Scotland for 5 years, resigning to devote more time to politics.

He stood for the Scottish Parliament in Ayr in 2007 and increased the SNP vote, the only candidate to do so. He is chairman of Engineering Scotland.

He is a family man with three adult children.

    I have been at two of the hustings so far. Iain white is the only one to have shown any passion (on the subjevt of asylum seekers) Jo Swinson talks a lot but does not say anything important. Mark Nolan is nearly as invisible as UKIP. Mary Galbraith does not know that Labour in East Dunbartonshire has removed the school buses.,
