Angus Candidate Profiles


Mike Weir

Mike Weir was educated in Aberdeen and is currently the SNP's Westminster Spokesperson for Trade and Industry, Energy and the Environment.  He also serves on the Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Committee.

He was previously a councillor on Angus Council, during which time he held the role of Convenor of the General Purposes Committee.

Prior to his election to the parliament in 2001, Mike was a solicitor and Partner for J&DG Shiell in Brechin.



Sanjay Samani

Sanjay was born in Tanzania in 1973 and moved to the UK aged 4. He was brought up in Leicester and studied at Loughborough Grammar school. He went on to read Computer Science at Jesus College, Cambridge. At University he was heavily involved in social and environmental campaigning.

Sanjay joined the Liberal Democrats in 1997 and campaigned in a number of Local, European and National Elections.

He has campaigned on issues such as road safety, buying local and supporting small businesses. His political goals are to eliminate Government waste, improve children's welfare and tackle environmental damage.

Sanjay lives in Perthshire and is married to Claire. They have one son, Dexter.



Kevin Hutchens

Kevin Hutchens is the Labour Party's candidate for Angus. He has a postgraduate diploma in social work and is currently a Community Development Officer for People with Learning Disabilities. Kevin is especially interested in aid, foreign affairs, environment, heritage and transport law. His hobbies include long distance walking, travel, the cinema and the theatre.


Alberto Costa

Alberto Costa, who is of Italian background, was born in Britain and raised and educated in Glasgow. He studied at the University of Glasgow, where he graduated with two degrees, as Master of Arts (Distinction) and Bachelor of Laws. He also studied at the University of Strathclyde, where he was awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice. He qualified as a Scottish solicitor and later re-qualified as an English solicitor.

Outside of his professional work, Alberto has been involved in politics for over 15 years. Whilst at Glasgow University he was elected President of the Students' Representative Council from 1995 to 1996, and he has been a member of a number of public bodies during his career. He is also a trustee of Islington Conservative Association, whose President is Boris Johnson.
