Aberdeen North Candidate Profiles

Frank Doran

Frank Doran was born in Edinburgh and left school at the age of 16. He went on to attend night classes before studying law at Dundee University. Upon his graduation Frank trained and qualified as a solicitor, mainly in legal aid and specialising in Child and Mental Health law.

In 1987 Frank was elected as MP for Aberdeen South and was made Shadow Minister for Oil and Gas by then party leader Neil Kinnock. In his role in the Shadow Energy department Mr Dobson worked closely with Tony Blair who headed up the team at that time.

Frank lost his seat in 1992 but didn't stray far from politics, returning to parliament to work as a researcher for Joan Ruddock MP.  Frank was re-elected to parliament in 1997 for Aberdeen Central.  In 2005 the three Aberdeen constituencies were merged into two and he was elected for Aberdeen North. He is currently Chair of the Administration Committee in the House of Commons.

Stewart Whyte

Stewart Whyte is 39 and a history teacher at Aboyne Academy. He was educated at the University of Aberdeen and did his teacher training at Northern College (Hilton Campus). He was the council candidate for Kittybrewster in 1999 and has stood in every parliamentary election since 2001.

He lived in Aberdeen North for 13 years, first in Old Aberdeen then in Rosemount. He currently lives in Westhill and chaired the Westhill and Elrick Community Council between 2003 and 2009.

Joanna Strathdee

Joanna was one of only two to make the breakthrough in Gordon and be elected to Aberdeenshire Council in 1999, re-elected in 2003 with a growing majority.

She has been the SNP Group Leader since 2007 and responsible, while in opposition, for negotiating £500,000 to be spent on SNP Group priorities in last year’s Council Budget process.

Joanna is also Vice Chair of the Marr Area Committee, Chair of the Aberdeenshire Central Licensing Board, Gordon Leisure Projects Trust and for several years was chair of KIMO UK.

She has been Gordon CA Convener for several years and one of the stalwart activists who worked tirelessly in the First Minister’s successful campaign in Gordon.

Kristian Chapman

Kristian Chapman, the Liberal Democrat Candidate for Aberdeen North, came to Aberdeen to study at the University of Aberdeen in 2006. Throughout his time in the city, Kristian became aware of the serious issues faced by its unique, hard-working, fair-minded people.

It was through this acute awareness of these issues drove Kristian to get deeply involved in the Scottish Liberal Democrat party in order to make a real contribution to a stronger, more prosperous and sustainable future for the people of Aberdeen.
