In 2007 I correctly predicted that Alex Salmond would take the Gordon Holyrood seat off the Libdems, despite the strength of Malcolm Bruce's and the Libdems' hold of the Westminster constituency of the same name. The new Aberdeenshire East seat is considerably different from the Gordon seat it replaces in that it loses Libdem areas around Huntly, Insch and Kintore on the south and gains a large chunk of Salmond's old Banff & Buchan seat. Alex Salmond would on the new boundaries have taken the seat in 2007 with a notional majority of 4,500. and with 45% of the vote. As probably the highest profile candidate in Scotland and the serving First Minister, I would guess that he will hold the seat convincingly with at least 60% of the popular vote and pushing the Libdem vote and Alison McInnes down to about 20% with the Conservatives just behind on 15%, with Labour further behind. I predict Salmond will double his notional majority to 9,000 and I would not be surprised if it exceeds 10,000 .
